The Ask
Domestic Light, a visionary media art project by Ian Winters, sought to explore the profound impact of light on human perception, memory, and our understanding of 'home.' Bridging art, data science, and global collaboration, the project's core challenge was to transform abstract environmental light data into a tangible, interactive experience. The ask was to develop a sophisticated digital platform capable of collecting, visualizing, and sharing real-time global light spectrum data, allowing users to deeply engage with the project's inquiry into light, color, and time from anywhere in the world.
The Delivery
At byNiko, we embraced the unique challenge of bringing Domestic Light's innovative concept to life. Our expertise in interactive development was key to translating complex data into a seamless user experience.
We meticulously built the core map functionality using Mapbox as the foundation, creating an intuitive global interface. The real magic happened as we leveraged React for the dynamic front-end and Chart.JS to efficiently query and display real-time light data from worldwide sensors. This robust architecture allows users to click on any point across the globe and instantly view the current light spectrums in that location. Our work provided the pivotal interactive component, transforming raw data into an accessible and captivating exploration of our planet's ever-changing light.
