I'm Nick.

I've been working in web technology for more than 15 years.

I've built websites, applications, and digital tools for businesses, artists, nonprofits, and other organizations. Along the way, the work has increasingly become less about writing code and more about figuring out what needs to happen, getting the right people involved, and getting the project across the finish line.

I like being in the middle of that.

I can talk through a problem with a client, work through requirements with a designer, get into the technical details with a developer, and help keep everyone moving in the same direction.

I started as a developer.

My technical background is primarily in WordPress, React, JavaScript, PHP, and front-end development.

I've built custom WordPress platforms, React applications, APIs and integrations, and the less glamorous things that make websites actually work.

But being able to build something isn't always the most important part of a project.

Knowing what to build, why to build it, and how to get it done usually matters more.

The work has gotten bigger.

At Fox Dealer, I was a major contributor to the concept and design of a shared WordPress platform that grew from approximately 15 to more than 300 dealership websites.

I led two junior developers and worked across engineering, product, UX, strategy, design, and project management.

In my own practice, I've worked directly with clients to define requirements, estimate projects, plan work, coordinate outside developers and designers, manage releases, troubleshoot problems, and keep projects moving.

That's the direction I want to keep moving in.

I like solving the actual problem.

A client doesn't usually come to me because they need React.

They come because something isn't working, they have an idea they don't know how to build, or they have a project that needs to move forward.

Sometimes the answer is a new website.

Sometimes it's better information architecture, faster pages, better SEO, a custom application, an integration, or simply a clearer plan.

The technology comes after we understand the problem.

A few things about me

I studied Neurobiology, Physiology & Behavior at UC Davis, with a minor in Sports Psychology.

I'm also a photographer, an actor, and a storyteller.

Those things aren't separate from the technical work. They all involve paying attention, figuring out what matters, communicating clearly, and making something work for the people experiencing it.

What I'm doing now

Through byNiko, I work with organizations and businesses on websites, digital projects, technical consulting, and ongoing support.

I'm also looking for opportunities to bring my technical background and project experience into a full-time Project Manager or Technical Project Manager role.
