An interactive art project about disability and accessibility

The Ask

Doctor Doctor is a media art project by an artist working with Fulcrum Arts. The project explores what it is like to live with a disability and how assistive technology changes the way people experience the web.

The artist wanted the website itself to be part of that idea. Instead of simply making an accessible version of a story, the experience would change based on the accessibility tools a visitor used.

The Work

I worked with the artist to figure out how that idea could work as a web experience.

I built a custom accessibility interface that changes the way the story is presented on the page. The controls aren't just there to adjust the interface - they are part of the artwork and affect the story itself.

The project required both front-end development and consulting around how the interaction should work, translating the artist's concept into something that could actually be built and experienced in a browser.

The Result

The finished site uses the mechanics of web accessibility as part of the artwork itself.

Rather than telling visitors about the experience of navigating the web with assistive technology, the project gives them a way to interact with that idea directly.
