The Ask

Doctor, Doctor, an impactful media art project under the Fulcrum Arts umbrella, aimed to tell the nuanced and often challenging story of living with a disability through the web. The artist's vision was to transcend traditional narrative forms, creating an online experience that wasn't just accessible, but where accessibility itself became integral to the storytelling. The ask was to develop a unique digital platform that could both convey a personal journey and fundamentally alter a user's interaction with the content, mirroring the way assistive technologies mediate the web for individuals with specific needs.

The Delivery

At byNiko, we were deeply moved by the artist's vision for Doctor, Doctor and collaborated closely to bring this innovative concept to life. Our approach was highly consultative, translating their profound narrative into a truly interactive digital experience.

Inspired by the transformative nature of assistive technologies like AccessiBe, we decided to leverage that model not just for access, but as a core storytelling device. We meticulously custom-built an "accessibility widget" that was central to the project's unique narrative. This bespoke widget wasn't about simple compliance; it was designed to dynamically change the story drawn on the page and fundamentally alter how users interacted with it. By re-imagining the very tools of web accessibility, we enabled the platform to deliver a powerful, empathetic, and truly unconventional exploration of disability through the digital medium.
